Local scaffolders
1st Scaffolding (Berkshire) Ltd was founded in 1990 to provide safe, reliable scaffolding for clients in Reading and the surrounding area, and Reading remains our home patch. Our yard is in Tidmarsh, a few miles west of the town, so surveys, deliveries, inspections and adaptations are all a short drive away.
We cover the whole town, from the commercial centre to Caversham, Tilehurst, Earley and Woodley, and every kind of job in between: domestic scaffolding for roofs, extensions and redecoration, commercial and industrial access, temporary roofs and specialist structures. Our Reading projects include a netted wrap around The George Hotel in the town centre for external painting, and a full-height scaffold on the town’s old council offices ahead of demolition.

Only if the scaffold stands on the public highway. Scaffolding kept entirely within your own property does not need a highway licence. If any part goes on the pavement or road, the council must license it before it goes up: Reading Borough Council within the borough, including Caversham; Wokingham Borough Council in Earley and Woodley; and West Berkshire Council in Calcot, Theale, Purley on Thames and parts of Tilehurst. We will tell you at the survey whether your site needs one.

It depends on the job and our programme at the time, but being based just outside Reading makes surveys and deliveries straightforward to arrange. Tell us your start date when you enquire and we will be honest about when we can get the scaffold up.

Yes. Reading has a number of conservation areas and listed buildings. If yours is one of them, check with Reading Borough Council’s planning team before any fixings go into the historic fabric. We are happy to share the proposed tie arrangement with them in advance.
